Module 4: Activity 2

Which NRP topic area(s) or "missing pillar(s)" that Allington describes do you find to be most vital for children's literacy success? Why?

There are many key components  that are vital for children's literacy success. I believe comprehension to be the most important part in literacy. If a child does not understand what he/she read, then what's the point of reading.  Reading is mainly about comprehending and gathering information from the text. I also believe that our students should  have access to their favorite, and fascinating book.  If students are allowed to choice their own books, then they will want to read, and comprehension would come naturally.

Students should be reading on their correct level as well. Allington mentioned this to be one of the missing pillars that is vital for the success of children' literacy. He stated that our students can't read Social Studies or Science books because they are not on their level. Allignton also mentioned that if students can't read a text, then they won't understand or learn anything from that text.

Allington made some valid points about the missing pillars to successful child literacy. Students should be able to comprehend what they read,  read interesting texts that are on their levels, display reading and writing reciprocated, the teacher should use small group and side-by-side instruction, and expert attention should always be readily available in order to have success for our children's literacy.
