Reflect on what strategy or strategies Robin used most to help him learn to read.
I was very impressed and motivated to see Robin learn how to read at 50 years old. That is truly a blessing. My father-in-law was on his way to learning how to read at age of 61, but he passed almost a month ago. So that story truly touched my heart. Robin was determined to learn how to read, and he didn't give up.
Robin started out using phonemes to learn how to read. He was placing his word endings with different beginnings. Phonological awareness is a key component in learning how to read. Even though Robin made mistakes, he kept trying until the words made since. He then started reading in chunks. He was able to blend his words, and chunk his sentences together. Robin started reading leveled text. He made some mistakes, but he knew the words he pronounced incorrectly didn't sound correct. Robin immediately went back and corrected his mistake.
Robin then started to write a story while he read it. Once he came to spelling error, he used his white board and dry erase marker to fix his mistakes. Robin progressed on to speaking about reading in chunks. Robin then went on to read different texts. For example, he read the comics, ads, birthday cards, and his bible. He also learned how to set up an email account. Robin progressed from one level to the next with his reading.
Robin has shown us that all you have to do is believe. He displayed courage by not giving up on learning how to read. It was difficult for him especially being 51, but he pushed on to achieve his goals. Robin's story is truly influential and should be shown to all teachers. n
