Hocked gems financing him, our hero defied the scornful laughter. "Think of it as an egg, not a table", he said. Then three sturdy sisters sought proof, forging over vast calmness, and sometimes over turbulent peaks and valleys, until at last welcome winged creatures appeared, signifying monumental success.
1. What are the hocked gems?
Hocked means a cut. Gems are stones. So hocked gems are stones that were cut in order to finance(to pay) a trip this character was taking to an unknown land.
2. What should we think of as an egg and not a table?
Something valuable. An egg is easily to break, and a table is strong and not easily broken. So the man was making a comparison of something that is valuable and precious like an egg and to a table which is sturdy.
3. Who are the three sturdy sisters?
The three sturdy sisters were three people who wanted proof of what the character was trying to convince them. They didn't believe that it like an egg and not a table. The three sisters wanted proof from the character.
4. What kind of winged creatures appeared?
The winged creatures were eagles flying over the boat to ensure that the trip was a success. Eagles are symbolic to freedom, so they were signifying that the people on the boat had made it to a free land.
If you were to use this passage with students, what schema would you need to activate with them first?
I would allow the children to read the passage three times, and tell them to circle all of the words in the passage that they are having trouble pronouncing and defining. I would also ask the children to predict the meaning of the passage by drawing a graphic organizer to display their ideas.
How can you help teach children whose schema and the text's content don't match?
I could guide the students in using context clues to figure out the meaning of the passage. Also, the students could look up the words in the dictionary to better understand the meaning of the words and passage.
How much time should children spend in texts that don't match their interests or schema?
There should not be a set time limit for students to spend on those type of texts because those types of texts are broadening their vocabulary and depth of knowledge. Even though they may not be interested in a text that those not match their interests, they are still being exposed to different types of texts.
